Civil Judgement

I received a $9000 judgement in 1996. I have been consistantly paying on it for a couple of years now. Does the judgement expire after a certain amount of years? If so what are the steps that I should take?

Judgments stay in effect for 12 years but can be renewed by the judgment creditor.
