Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Legal fees

In the wrongful death suit of my husband about 12 years ago, my attorney agreed that his fee was 1/3 of the settlement. When the settlement came through, he deducted his 1/3 and also all of the expenses incurred in the case - about $50,000. Was I supposed to pay those expenses or was that part of his fee?

Re: Legal fees and accounting

Attorney fees apply to the settlement in gross and expenses generally paid from the settlement after deduction of the fee. My contract provides clarity on this division. Should any ambiguity exist with your contract then you should contact an attorney.
