It sounds like you weren't treating the relationship as a traditional landlord/tenant, and there was no lease. If you had an oral agreement to pay rent on a monthly basis, and you were evicted before the month for which you paid was over for no good reason, your "landlord" ought to refund the unused portion, but you wouldn't be entitled to all of your money back.
