Legal Question in Immigration Law in Maryland
marriage to an immigrant
I have a friend I have known for about two years. She is from Jamaica and has been here on a student visa. I am 22 and she is 20. Her visa is about to expire and she wants me to marry her so she can stay in the country. If we marry, can we wait a while until we apply for a change of status? and would this make the USCIS less suspicious of the marriage?

Re: marriage to an immigrant
A piece of advice, young man -- don't do it! You could be charged with a federal criminal offense and neither you nor she will benefit. If you are trying to skirt around the immigration process by marrying someone so they can obtain documents, you will really live to regret such a step if you are caught in the act. Tell your friend to finish her degree, take the practical training and then try to change later to an H1B. What you and she contemplate could ruin you both. Good luck!
