Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Maryland

On July 30th, I moved out of a room in a 5 bedroom house that I had been subletting for two months. On August 10th, I received a phone from one of the tenants saying that the previous night someone had broken into the house via my second floor room's balcony and burglarized him. Though he did not say so, he is expecting that I pay for the damages and stolen property since I failed to secure my porch door well enough when I left. He is asking for nearly $1,000. What should I do?

Do you have renter's insurance?

If so, make a claim.

Otherwise, what does the lease say about maintenance and insurance?

If you called the police, what did they say about how the breakin occurred?

All these questions need to be answered before your liability can be determined.

However, if the breakin was due to your negligence, you might be liable.
