Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

how much notice on a verbal rental is needed. nothing is in writing

I have rented a furn room and a bathroom in my basement, with the understanding he also share the rec room. The furniture and tv are mine for everybody to use since the tenant had nothing of his own. What has happened the tenant not only uses the rec room all the time sleeps there and watches tv, and when I put my footon into a sofa. Gets mad because he wants to sleep on it in the shared area of the house , He continues to say that it must stay the way he wants it, gets upset when I go down in the basement. Just before the end of the month ,last month he gave me 3 days notice that he was leaving. On the first of the month he asked for an extention of 2 weeks which I gave him. He paid for two weeks only, can I ask him to leave when his two weeks ate up?, we have nothing in writing.

The answer to your question depends on how often your roomer was paying his rent. If he was generally paying monthly, and he pays at the beginning of each month, he's entitled to 30 days notice. If on the other hand he was paying weekly, they he's probably only entitled to 1 week's notice. So at the beginning of the "rent period" you inform him (preferably in writing) that this is his last month/week and he's got no right to stay beyond the notice period or he's subject to eviction.
