Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

I am a resident of Maryland. I was pulled over for a broken brake light at approx. 2100 Saturday 8 October. My Maryland license is expired and was unable to provide registration at the time of the incident. I have Washington State Tags (current) . I do possess my current registration, it just wasn't in the car. While never asked by the officer I also don't have current auto insurance. I was issued citations for A. failure to display license to the police on demand ($50.00), B. driving with an expired license ($70.00) and must appear order within 5 business days for a preliminary inquiry. I am in the process of fixing the brake light and inquiring with DMV about my expired license. I have extremely limited financial means and need advice on how to proceed. This is my only means of transportation and am the only wage earner in a family of 3 with numerous medical bills. I need advice before the inquiry so I don't make matters worse.

Fortunately, you indicate that you were not cited for jailable offenses. If you ask for a trial, then you would not end up in jail for them, even if you don't have a lawyer. If the citations are ultimately dismissed, then you won't have to pay them. If not, then you would probably have to pay court costs on top of the fine(s). Sometimes the judge reduces the fine.

Your money would probably best be spent getting your license, insurance and registration in compliance before this happens again.
