Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland
I was riding a 50cc scooter to class on the university of maryland's campus. The only way to get to class was to hop on to the sidewalk for a few seconds to navigate around a gate. I then got off the sidewalk and was pulled over by a cop. They gave me two fines. One for riding on the sidewalk and the second for navigating around a traffic control device. Should I plead guilty with explanation or go to trial?

Whether to exercise your rights is up to you. There would probably be little or no difference in penalty between the two options that you listed, if you lost a trial. A third option would be to mail in the fine. However, if the officer does not appear for court or if you win, then your citations would be dismissed.
Consider that guilty findings may result in points on your driving record, and that can cost you your privilege and increased insurance premiums.
