whats the difference between state and federal minimum wage

The minimum wage for most MD workers is $6.15. Right now the federal minimum wage is $5.25, but Congress is expected to shortly increase it up to $7.25, although that will be accomplished in 3 stages over a 2 year period. Once that law passes, if the federal wage is higher than $6.15, it will apply in MD.

The Federal minimum wage is the lowest amount that can be paid to qualified employees. A State cannot set a lower amount. Some states have minimum wage requirements that are more generous to the employee than the Federal minimum wage requirement.
