Legal Question in Workers Comp in Maryland
I am an independent contractor. The company I work for is requiring that I either provide them with a certificate of workman's compensation insurance or they will automatically deduct 3% from my daily pay.
Can they do this, and if so, if I pay their 3% and something happens to me on the job, can I then receive workman's comp?
Also, where can I look to find my own workman's comp. insurance?
Thank you in advance.

Presumably the company is telling you that if you don't have your own workers' comp coverage they will add you to their policy and the additional cost will be paid for by the 3% deduction. So you would be covered under that scenario, but you should verify this with them. If you want your own coverage, there are many companies that sell it, including the Injured Workers Insurance Fund (IWIF) which is probably the biggest. You should be able to find them on line.
