Legal Question in Workers Comp in Maryland

Should I leave my case open or close it?

I am being told by several people I should leave my worker's comp case open. I am having shoulder surgery on Monday.. this is my dominant arm..I don't know if that matters. I also have 5 bulging discs in my neck, 2 completely herniated/collapsed.. all with stenosis. I was told I need to have neck surgery too, but we are taking care of the shoulder first. I know I would be offered alot more money to close my case since I am only 30, but what are the advantages of leaving it open? I am sure I was told I only have 2 years to reopen it, is this true? What if I don't have any problems in the next 2 years, but do in 5? I just do not want to deal with WC or any of this anymore. I want the surgeries that need to be done.. done, and that's it.. I never want to be out of work this long again. It has been 1 1/2 years already. What is the best option? I can't say enough.. how much I am looking forward to this all being over with. Thanks in advance for responding :)

You definitely should leave the case open so that the carrier will be obliged to cover ongoing medical expenses post-surgery. Only when your doctor tells you that you've made a complete recovery and that there's no chance that you will need further medical treatment should you consider a full and final settlement.
