Bankruptsy Wthout an Attorney

Is there any way I can file a bankruptsy without an attorney? I really cannot afford an attorney and have no choice but to file. My credit card debt is very old and approximately $20K. I have old medical bills that my ex-husband will not pay. I want to save my home. Could you tell me how to go about this? First steps?

Yes, one "can" file for bankruptcy without a lawyer, but that is usually a false economy. An innocent mistake can end up costing far more than the lawyer's fee.

For example, a home can normally be saved, under a homestead exemption - but only if the proper legal steps are taken.

Look in the yellow pages and call a few lawyers who specialize in bankruptcy - you may be surprised how low their fees are.

If you cannot afford those fees, try Legal Aid. Most bar associations also have a panel of lawyers willing to work for reduced fees.
