Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Massachusetts

MA Cigarette Tax

I believe that the state of MA has violated my civil rights by increasing the tax on cigarettes another $1.00. This makes the total tax on them around 70%. This is clearly taking advantage of people who are addicted to cigarettes. This seems to be a form of discrimination. I am looking for a legal means to pursue this grievance. Can I sue the state of MA for discrimination?

Re: MA Cigarette Tax

Discrimination is generally not illegal in Massachusetts.

Only discrimination on the basis of a person's membership or perceived membership in a protected class violates the law in some instances, like housing, employment, and public accomodations.

I am sympathetic to people who have become addicted to nicotene, and there may be novel or new legal theory not yet contrived to deal with your situtation. However, cigarette smokers are not a protected class.
