Legal Question in Consumer Law in Massachusetts

Credit card machine lease

My husband and I owned a company and had 3 credit card machines. Because he had no credit (Do to bankruptsy) I signed the lease for our first machine. He obtained two more machines (which I felt we did not need) a year later but I did not sign the lease. Last October he abandoned us after I found out he had used my personal credit card instead of his own. I sold the business but Northern Leasing in New York has been chasing me for the balance owed on the two credit card machines he or someone else signed MY NAME on . I filed police reports and afidavids in Cranston, RI but I got a notice to appear in court in Manhattan on Jan 4, 2008. I have a disabled daughter who is very sick and because of my ex we live $30.00 a month over the poverty level. Northern leasing is based in Manhattan. I lived and signed the first lease (which I paid off) in Rhode Island. I now live in Massachusetts. WHAT SHOULD I DO? I DON'T KNOW ANYONE IN MANHATTAN AND I CAN NOT AFFORD TO MAKE THE TRIP. More Important I DIDN'T SIGN IT!!!

Re: Credit card machine lease

Whether you should (1) pay off the lease, (2) agree to settle for a smaller % of the lease, (3) agree to some sort of payment plan that you can afford, and/or (4) hire an attorney really depends on the amount of money at stake here.

Whatever you do, do not ignore these notices or hearings. If you fail to show up, you lose your right to challenge their allegations.
