Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

I fell behind on my car payments by $1563. By the next month when they gave me a payment arrangement to catch up, I had already paid them $1400 and said that I will pay the remaining $163 along with December's payment. My finance company's lawyer sent me a letter stating that I was to abide by their payment plan or have the car repossessed. This means that I will be paying back double what I owe them.
