If you do not answer the complaint and summons, then you will be defaulted. A default judgment will award the plaintiff everything they are asking for, including interest and court costs, and will continue to accrue 12% interest each year. Your smartest and most cost-effective move would be to answer the complaint, asserting all defenses, and obtain some assistance in settling the debt. Once you answer the complaint, you will have an opportunity to request information and documents from the plaintiff that may assist you in determining the validity of the debt. Our office represents clients in your situation throughout Massachusetts, and would be happy to discuss the matter with you. Good luck.
