Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

My son was arrested for lewd & lesious speech & something. We went the next day to Court and they gave us another date. What happens at the next date??? Will they just decide if it goes to a trial, possibly dismiss, give a fine.....He has never been in trouble and this is really killing him. They appointed him an attorney and we haven't heard from him when will he call week before date??? If they just decide if trial...then I'll go with appointed cause he obviously has relationship at that court & my son doesn't have much money. If goes to trial then probably try to find money to hire another attorney.
