Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts
Divorce and Custody
I met a woman who is getting a divorce next Tuesday in Plymouth court and does not have an attorney to represent her. She is on disability and is coming out of a terribly abusive marriage in which her husband is fighting for 100% physical custody of their young son. She needs assistance from someone but does not know where to turn and has little or no money. Is it possible for her to find an attorney to be there for her on Tuesday to at least be present for her during the case or someplace she can go to get free legal services?
Out of desperation and fear, she is thinking of calling her husband's attorney to sign off on the divorce and custody papers before Tuesday.
Please answer as soon as possible. Thank you for you assistance.

Re: Divorce and Custody
Have her go to the clerk's office in the court.
There is a program called LAWYER FOR THE DAY.
(That does not mean that the lawyer will only
represent her for that day, it simply means that
there is a lawyer assigned that day to represent
people who cannot afford lawyers or who need representation.)
She might be able to go ahead of time, get someone assigned, and be able to tell that lawyer her story ahead of time.
The lawyers in the program are known in the court and generally have experience.
