Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

My friend says that when he goes to family court he has to pay for his ex girlfriends lawyer, even if she brought him to court to up his child support. Does this make any sense?

In some circumstances, but especially when one person's improper conduct or failure to follow a court order is the reason the parties are in court, a court can make one party pay for the other's attorney's fees. You may not have the whole story from your friend. Your friend may want to retain his own attorney to help him advocate for his own interests.
