Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

My husband was just laid off (seasonal job) this week, but his boss had never told him how he was going to handle health insurance during the laid off months. Told him he was looking into COBRA, but never said if or when we would not have family health insurance. Today, my husband called the office secretary, and she told him that, as of today, we are not covered. There was no warning at all. Job is in the state of Massachusetts (we live in Rhode Island). Is this legal to give no warning when you cut someone's health insurance? We are a family of 4 (I'm pregnant and have 2 children under age 3), and all 4 of us were 50% covered through my husband's job. Thanks!
