Legal Question in Traffic Law in Massachusetts
Towing Law Question
Hello Law Guru,
I recently had a 1996 Chevy Corsica which was currently deemed in-operable and the price to fix it far exceeded what it was worth. Therefore I was going to donate my car to a charity they were going to pick up my car at my house.
I removed my license plates and cancelled my insurance on Saturday January 15th, on Sunday January 16th; I realized my car was gone. I called the charity to see if they had come a day earlier to pick the car up and they didn't, I called the Revere police department to see if it had been towed and they said it had and gave me the towing company's name and number.
I called them and explained that the car doesn't work anymore, it's not insured, and its no longer registered, and would it be possible for the charity to come there and pick the car up? The individual I spoke to said not only WAS THAT NOT POSSIBLE, it was $140 to get the car out of their tow yard and for every day that passed they were going to charge me $20 and if I don't pick up the car after a week that they were going to sue me.
I just want to know if you can give me any advice as to what to do or if in fact they can sue me for trying to help a charity.
