Legal Question in Business Law in Michigan

Non-Profit Corporations

We are interested in starting a non-profit networking group for hobbyist and career crafters in Michigan. The organization would foster fellowship between the members.

In addition, we will sponsor conferences, craft shows, membership directories and mailing campaigns that will help to advertise individual member businesses.

We will neither have employees nor property under the organization's name. All funds will be raised through membership fees and registration fees for services and events. We also do not expect to have any charitable donations to the organization at this time.

We would like to file as a Michigan Non-Profit Organization. Is this possible without filing for Tax Exempt status under Section 501(a)? We will file for an EIN and Sales and Use Taxes with Michigan. We would prefer to wait to file for Tax Exempt status until we have obtained a few more members, thus allowing us to justify the cost? Is this possible? Thank You.

Re: Non-Profit Corporations

You are not required to apply for tax-exempt status under Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code. You can be a Michigan Nonprofit Corporation without having tax exempt status.
