Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan
My husband received a phone call from a 844 area code. A lady claiming to be a lawyer and trying to collect a debt from 2012, she said we could settle in one day if we paid by credit card and she offered to help resolve any other debts we may have for free to help us out because my husband was so nice. She had all of our information. We googled her and the law office she said she was from but found nothing. What should we do?

I want to help but don't have enough information. What kind of debt is it? If it is a payday loan debt be very skeptical. Is the debt listed on your credit report? Do you actually owe the debt? Has this "law firm" sent you any letters in the mail? Did they offer to take a money order, cashiers check or personal check by mail? If a collector refuses to accept any payment other than by credit card I would be very skeptical. There is a lot of fraud these days and a lot of people posing as collectors when they are frauds extorting money. I suggest you find out their address and if they refuse to provide a mailing address then it is very likely a scam. Send a letter asking about the debt and the original creditor and see how they respond. A debt collector has to provide you a written notice within 5 days of initial contact.
