Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Accused of theft.
I am being accused of stealing $600 from a lady I used to live with. I have never stolen a thing in my life. A police officer has already spoken with me and asked if I would agree to take a polygraph test which I responded yes in fear of looking quilty. A few of my friends and family have told me I should not take the test because they can be incorrect. My questions are do I have to take the test and who pays for it if I do take it?

It is normally not a good idea to take legal advice from friends and family. I recommend you get an attorney involved to try to avoid the filing of any charges. We have handled MANY such cases with great results all over the State of Michigan.

No, you don't have to take the test. The cops pay for it. They probably don't have enough to charge you. The results of the test cannot be used at trial. If you flunk the test, they'll try to get a confession. If you pass, they'll usually leave you alone.
By saying yes to the test and then backing out, you create suspicions that call for further investigation.
Why did you fear looking guilty?

Don't do the police's job for them and stop talking. You should immediately hire an attorney. If they had enough evidence they would have charged you already. If you need help contact my office at 248.705.3742
