Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

If you have been arrested by the Shelby Township Police (Michigan, U.S.A.) for Retail Fraud (Shop lifting) and are a Canadian Citizen and are to appear in Court within 10 days to set a court day, is it ok for your lawyer to attend this court date within 10 days on your behalf or must you appear in person?

You personally do not have to attend your first appearance if you contact an attorney. I have represented Canadians in Michigan Courts. The 41A District Court is no exception. Depending on the circumstances, you may not have to appear at all, but I would need to know more about your retail fraud - particularly the dollar amount of the goods involved.
