Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Hello,
My son's first parole meeting is coming up in may 2014. I'd like to get his restitution payed off first because it is lower now then the others. I can't seem to to it on line.Do I have to go to the court house to pay off just one fee? the other fees are all together. I hope you can help.

Look at his Judgment of Sentencing to make sure. A lot, if not most, courts require you to make restitution payments payable to the victim but turned in and paid through the court. If not, you would pay it directly to the victim and provide proof to the court. Contact a court clerk to speak about restitution and ask them how it should be done. They would be able to give you a better idea.
It is best to check with the court clerk for that case. In my county, payments are made to the court, and then the court logs it in, credits the case record, and sends checks to the victims. You can make a payment that is for restitution only but you must specify that. Otherwise, it is split 50/50 between victim payments (restitution and the crime victim's rights fee) and non-victim payments (costs, fines, etc.).
