Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

child support

Have been a resident of Kentucky for 3 years. Divorced in Michigan. Have been issued a child support modification order that leaves me with little and insufficient net income for necessary living expenses. I am a full time employee and earn $11.00 p.h. . Recent referee hearing was suspicious. I was not allowed to properly explain my objection or present my case. Also suspect of bias during hearing due to fact that current director in charge of Friend of Court in County was plaintiff's (mother) attorney during divorce process. What are my rights? Will an appeal result in favorable results? How can I find affordable legal representation across state lines?

Re: child support

I am assuming the child is still in Michigan and the support orders are out of Michigan from the way the question is worded. Given that, I am hoping that a Michigan lawyer will answer you with specifics. Michigan will retain jurisdiction over the child support and will have an appeal process if you file your appeal within the statutory time period (usually 30 days for most types of appeals).

As far as affordable representation - you will typically get the level of representation you pay for. If a good lawyer costs you several hundred dollars but gets your child support lowered to a liveable level, then you have gotten affordable representation.
