Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

child support

My sons father has never paid child support. He is a former employee of the US Postal service, now is on SSI. He owns a house all paid for. Can I collect child support somehow. We are desparate.

Re: child support

You don't mention whether you have a valid order of support or whether the parents were divorced. I doubt that SSI payments can be garnisheed directly, but you should be able to obtain some relief. Why did the father obtain SSI? Perhaps there is a personal injury suit in the works or he is permitted a small job on the side, --check to make sure. If you do not have an order and are desperate, you can start by applying for welfare benefits. One of the first things they will do is check to see whether the father has any resources. If they can get re-imbursement from him, then they will pursue it. If you have already tried that, then you may want to hire counsel to seek an order requiring support for the child or to explore other possible options.
