my wife abandoned me five months ago and took the kids with her across state line to Chicago, Illinois after 16 years. What are my rights and is there a timeline that I should be aware of.

Is a divorce pending? If not, I think you would be better off filing first here in Michigan. If you wait long enough for your wife to establish residency in Illinois, she will file there...
