Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Runaways in Michigan

In the state of Michigan can a runaway be prosecuted, or what would the punishments be? Also, how old do you have to be to legally move out of your house without parental consent?

Re: Runaways in Michigan

If the runaway is under the age of 17 the juvenile can be charged with home truancy. The case will be heard in the Family Court, Juvenile Division (old Probate Court, Juvenile Division) . I have not heard of a 17 year old being charged in the adult system as a runaway.

If the juvenile is at least 16 and has the ability to support him/herself emancipation may be an option.

NOTE: My opinion does not constitute legal advice unless I have been specifically retained as legal counsel and completely informed of the facts of the situation.
