Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

Ex-roommate owes money

I let a friend of mine move into my rented house because he had no where else to go. He is receiving Social Security Survivors Benefits so i figured he'd be able to keep up with the rent. He lived with me about 3 months. Right before he moved out he fell alseep with a cigarette in his hand and destroyed/damaged some of my property. Between the fire damage, back rent and various other things he owes me almost $2,000. I have made numerous attempts to get the money, even offering to let him make small payments. I believe i have a case in small claims but am worried because he is only 17. Do i have a chance in small claims? I have documentation and witnesses to verify everything he owes me.

While a 17 year old cannot be liable on a contract, he may be liable for negligence. Sue and see what happens. Bill Stern
