Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan
Repayment of financial gift
While my fiance was in Iraq he gave me $6,000 to purchase a manufatured home. I did so, and I am the sole owner on the title. Two weeks later he broke up with me. It has been 6 months and he has now come looking for repayment of the money he gave me (the money was not LOANED). My question is, am I required by law to repay my ex fiance for the money he gave me?

Re: Repayment of financial gift
If your fiance can convince a judge, or a jury if it goes to trial, that he loaned you the money or gave you the money to purchase a home for the two of you to live in, you will be required to pay back the money. You could win if the evidence points to a gift (sounds unlikely), but do not expect to win if he loaned you money without proper loan documents because he was out of the country, or if you engaged in some fraudulent activity by putting the house in your name only if he expected it to be in joint names, or if something you did caused the breakup.
Good luck.

It sounds like a gift and therefore, you do not have to pay it back. William S. Stern
