Legal Question in Immigration Law in Michigan

Hi, I have a friend who is currently serving his sentence in an Oklahoma Corrections facility, and I would like to know if whether it is possible for my friend to surrender his Permanent Residency while he is serving his sentence. The reason why my friend is considering this is that he would like to know if it is in his best interest to surrender his status as a resident while serving his sentence, so that he would not need to surrender his Permanent Resident status when he is released . Would this be possible?

He'll need to see an Immigration Judge after his release from custody. A permanent residency may be surrendered at the US embassy abroad, CBP, immigration court. When he is no longer a permanent resident, he'll have to leave the USA.

He can't surrender his green card to prison authorities.
