Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Breaking a lease

I need to break a lease. I am not sure on how to go about this- since this situation is ''unique.'' I have 7 months to go on this lease, and I have moved out of the apartment, since october 13th of 2006. My ex is my roommate, and I was forced to leave- due to his violent issues. I also had to file 2 police reports to keep him at bay [I am living at home.] I now discovered an STD he knowingly gave to me. I offered to take over the lease, sublease, buyout-- he will not leave. I am basically paying my portion of rent for him to be comfertable- since both of our names are on the lease. I don't want to ruin my credit either. I am unsure what to do- he is mentally unstable--and I even had to go to a therapist because of how he verbally abused me. If I break the lease.. how bad will this effect me/credit? Is there anyway I can evict him? Please any information- I do not know where else to go.

Re: Breaking a lease

You need to meet with your apartment manager. Provide copies of the police reports and see if they will arrange to work with you. Perhaps they can file a 30-day notice to terminate your lease so that you both have to move out. Then if they allow, the next day you could move back in, have the locks changed and continute the lease without penalty. The most important is to talk to the apartment manager. If there are any charges pending you may be able to seek an order from the judge to order him out.
