Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

I need to terminate my rental lease 8 months early due to my father's terminal illness, to become his caregiver at his residence. My landlord said he would allow me out of the lease early if I sign a letter from him, agreeing for him to keep my deposit and that I agree to pay Feb. 2016 rent. I will be moving out Jan. 31, 2016. I asked him politely, "and if I don't sign the letter, what then?" He got a little snarky with me and said "you do what you have to do and I will do what I have to do, take you to court." My question is, are there any legal provisions in the State of Michigan, of terminating a rental contract early due to medical issues, without having to pay the entire remainder of the rental contract? Thank you in advance.

No there isn't. You have been offered a fair settlement of paying 2/8 months and I would take it. Otherwise, you will likely owe all 8 months. Fairness would dictate what you are looking for, but the law isn't fair in these circumstances.
