Legal Question in Personal Injury in Michigan

Can a court case be used to set prescedent (no matter what state the case was tried in) at a trial/court hearing? For example, if a person was injured by firework display and wants to sue the host, the person shooting the display and the township. If there was a case in a different state which is similar could that be used? Or does it have to be within the same state? Also, this could be under a few different laws, personal injury, wrongful death (if that's the case) neglegience so I wasn't sure which one to pick down below. The laws of each state are different, so usually it doesn't matter. If there is no law on a topic, then it may be persuasive, but certainly not binding. Tim Klisz
