Legal Question in Personal Injury in Michigan

slander

The grandparents of my children have published items in the local newspaper claiming falsehoods. They have been asked to see their grandchildren only when their son has visitation, which they have done. This action is a result of continued choices on their part which I feel endanger the children. Instead of just enjoying their grandchildren when they see them, they are writing slanderous statements concerning me in the paper whenever grandparent rights are mentioned. The children read the paper in their classrooms and are very upset with their behavior. I have asked the grandparents to discontinue this type of behavior several times. Am I able to sue them for slander at this point, or am I able to pursue a PPO for this, as well as, their behaviors not mentioned. I need to protect the children and their best interests.

Re: slander

I would have to see that exact statements to know whether the statements were slanderous. As a parent, you have the right to prevent visitation. However, with the new grandparent right law that will kick in, they may have standing to petition the court for visitation. William S. Stern
