Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

expired registration

On the back of a ticket, it says you may correct the violation and have ''any law enforcement officer'' sign the ticket to certify the correction and wave the fine. Does this mean any officer from the department or any oficer period.

Re: expired registration

Could you imagine what a mess would be caused by allowing ANY officer to "correct" a violation? There are two considerations: policy and reality.

While it is possible that the provision was broadly drafted, so that police were free to correct obvious errors, it has to hold up in court and it has to pass administrative scrutiny.

On the other hand, the prosecutor or the judge could change something on a ticket, if it is clearly wrong, for example, if the officer clearly checked the wrong box on Mr/Mrs/Ms. This is an administrative correction, not a change to the underlying violation.

practically speaking, few officers would want to be known as someone who goes around "correcting" the tickets of their colleagues.

It would be sorta like lawyers running around "correcting" the pleadings of their colleagues : while you might REALLY want to, it's not just a matter of professional courtesy, it's a matter of responsibility: if you don't know something about it, you've no business changing it.
