fail to yield

I'm trying to find out how to look up the definition of ''fail to yield'' so I can better determine if I violated this traffic violation. I was waiting to make a left turn at a red light facing 2 lanes of on coming traffic. The light turned green, the on coming traffic did not move so after a few seconds (?), I made my turn and was given a ticket.

I went before a magistrate who agreed with officer and am now going before a judge. While waiting for magistrate in hallway, officer was talking with other drivers he gave tickets to and telling them how they could get reduced fines with no points if they plead guilty with explaination. He ran out of time to talk to me and there were about 20 other drivers in court that he had given tickets to.

MCL 257.649 states in relevant part as as follows. Call me if you need additional help 5862851700.

Sec. 649. (1) Approaching vehicle. The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right of way to a vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.

(2) Simultaneous entrance. When 2 vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right of way to the vehicle on the right.

(3) Modification of right-of-way rules at through highways. The right of way rules declared in subsections (1) and (2) are modified at through highways and otherwise as stated in this chapter.
