Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

Last night I went junk picking in warren michigan. I have a very tall trailer and nothing was hanging out of it. I went to the gas station to tie it all down before i got onto the expressway to go home. There was a state trooper already at the gas station. I pulled up to a pump, turned off my mini van, then started to walk inside. My mother was with me, so she got out the rope out and started to tie up the trailer. The cop came over to us and said. " you know that you need a tarp on this trailer before you travel on any highway." I told him that no i didnt know that. He then asked me to go back to my van and turn it on so he can check my lights on the trailer. He wrote me a ticket for falure to secure load. He said that it is a crimminal offance and that i need to call the magistrate with in 10 days. I told him that i would be calling tomorrow, he then told me that i couldnt call untill 2 days because his paper work would not be in. What can i do about this
