Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in Minnesota

appealing a plea of guilty

I pled quilty to a stop arm violation (misdemeanor) about 8 months ago which in turn was reduced to a petty misdemeanor although I believed I was not guilty and not in the wrong in this instance. It did not go to trial and I was fined. This was my first traffic violation and the first time I was at court. At the time, the public defender (I don't have a job) did not give me any counsel other then the offer of this guilty plea deal from the prosecuter. Time was rushed and there were a lot of people there and I signed after talking to my mother in back of the courtroom. Now I live with many consequences of pleading guilty to this which I was totally unaware of and not counseled about. I am only 18 and just started driving. What can I do to change my plea or make a motion to withdraw my guilty plea or have a chance to have a trial? Can I still ask the judge for a continuance for dismissal? How much does this all cost? I have no money to pay a lawyer. Will it do any good to write a letter to the Judge of the Wright district court explaining my situation? What do I need to do? Please help!

Re: appealing a plea of guilty

Unfortunately, if you paid the fine, the matter has been concluded. Chances of being able to reopen the matter would be slim to none.

A petty misdemeanor is not a criminal offense and is not a crimional record.
