can a creditor freeze a bank account due to a judgement when that account is a families only source of money?

Yes. The family would have to seek some exemption under the law.

It is possible that some or all of the funds in the account are "exempt" -- that is, cannot be taken by a creditor. The question is the source of the funds and the dollar amounts involved. There are strict time limits, so you need to consult an attorney (whether me or someone else) first thing next week.
