Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

My son is serving 3 years in a Minnesota prison. While he is there, does any of his time being served can it go towards his fines and or restitution for the crime committed? Also, is there such a law or rule in Minnesota that says whether he must pay his fines first and then restitution or even vice versa? Thank you.

Time in custody typically doesn't count toward fines or restitution. And whether the money he first pays goes to fines or restitution is usually decided at sentencing. The court would likely be able to tell you that.
