Re: Dui

Here's what is supposed to happen: South Dakota will revoke your privilege to drive in South Dakota under their state drivers license rules. They cant revoke your Minnesota drivers license. However, they are supposed to notify the State of Minnesota about your South Dakota DWI. Then, Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) will revoke your MN drivers license.

If this happens, you will be sent a letter from the DPS to the address on your drivers license. If you have moved and your address is no longer that which is on your DL, you wont get the letter because letters from the DPS are not forwarded. If you have moved, I suggest that you immediately get a new DL with your correct address.

If your Minnesota DL is revoked, a condition of reinstatement might be compliance with revocation rules in other states. In other words, Minnesota DPS might require you to do whatever the State of South Dakota requires you to do to regain your privilege to drive in South Dakota.

Final note: Suppose Minnesota revokes your DL. Suppose you get it reinstated and Minnesota doesnt require you to do anything about your South Dakota driving privileges. This means that although you can drive in Minnesota, you still cant drive in South Dakota!

I hope this makes sense. Good luck!

Yes. In most instances the license revocation in South Dakota will be reported in Minnesota and your licensein Minnesota will be revoked for the statutory period. On a first offense, that period is thirty (30) days.

If you fail to appear on the South Dakota offense, a warrant may issue for your arrest which would also sho up in Minnesota.
