Legal Question in Employment Law in Minnesota

Compensation for objectives accomplished

I currently have an end of year bonus tied to specific business objectives. It will be determined at the end of the year if those objectives are met and the bonus amount will be determined at that time. Payment will not occur until the end of February the following year. If I voluntarily leave the company on Feb 1 is the company obligated to pay out the bonus amount upon my voluntary termination (or at the end of February) based on compensation expectations established on work performed prior to the termination?

Re: Compensation for objectives accomplished

This issue would normally be defined under terms of a written contract. If there is no such contract, the determination would be based on contract law and when the bonus was "earned".

If the bonus is substantial and no written contract exists, it may warrant delaying your exit til the bonus is paid.
