Land Deed worthless?

Twenty years ago I asked my dad for some land on the family farm. He had a deed written up by a local attorney and gave it to me. He said that he owed the bank on the land and that I would have to pay off the land before I could have the deed recorded into my name. At the time I thought he owed too much on the property, so I placed the deed on a shelf in my office and forgot about it. Ten years later he sold the entire farm to a family friend , ( the land deeded to me included) Dad has been dead for about seven years, and I ran across the deed the other day. I think my question is, my deed ,though not recorded in the court house, was made before the present owner,so, does my deed have any value? Can I take the property? Thank you for your help.
