Legal Question in Consumer Law in Missouri

Auto Lease

Can you please tell me how much a dealer can charge for a car lease? Is there a legal limit? We leased a car that is worth eight thousand dollars less than what we owe. Do we have a legal avenue to get out of this lease? Thank You.

Re: Auto Lease

Yes. There MAY be statutory limits in your case. However, you have not provided enough information. Missouri allows parties to make private law in many consumer areas. That means that a consenting contracting party may create obligations for themself that are grater than what the law would normally impose upon them. It is at the heart of contractual freedom. There are several laws to prevent someone being grossly cheated, when in an inferior bargaining position. However, just because you now owe more than teh free market value of teh car, does not in itself make a deal grossly unfair. In lease agreements there are often agreement whereby the lessor does more than allow the lessee to drive teh car. Often they must provide soem maintenance or other services. There is also the matter of interest due, and agreed upon penalty amounts.

Without more information, I cannot tell you whether there is a prevention or prohibition from you owing more than the car is now worth.
