Legal Question in Consumer Law in Missouri
billing from utility
Recieved electric bill Aug. 2002 it was grossly under charged. Called Electric Co. stating this couldn't be correct cause I knew I used more electricity than what bill charge was. Told they could only bill me for what meter read. Dec. 4, 2002, Electric Co. replaced meter, stated it was not working. Received Dec. bill, now they want to back charge me to March of 2002. Beings I notified them in Aug. with concerns that reading could be right, am I obligated for their meter being defective & not doing something when I'd called in Aug.

Re: billing from utility
This is not an easily answered question. I do not know how they determined what amount of KWH had been used since March 2002. If they are just guessing, thatn you should prevail in preventing them from hounding you about paying for more than they can prove. If, however, the new meter can somehow show accurately what was used sing March of 2002, than you may have to pay it. I would imagien that the electric company would be willing to work with you in paying it off over time.
You might contact teh Board of Utilities in your area. If you tell them your situation, they might be able to help.
Good Luck,
