It largely depends on which court you are in. The amount of work required to amend a speeding violation varies wildly from court to court. Some courts it can take the entire day and cost more. The same task can be accomplished in other courts in minutes. The fines are usually between $150.00 and $200.00 for a first violation, and the fees anywhere from $100.00 to $300.00 depending on which court it is and how much time it will take the lawyer. The more burdensome the court and time consuming, the more it costs.
Sometimes it is possible to enter into a plea bargain in which the defendant winds up with an SIS (suspended imposition of sentence), and so there is no conviction and no fine. The defendant must usually stay out of trouble for a specified period of time (usually six months or so). In other cases it is possible that the court will allow the defendant to avoid the conviction by attending driving school. Finally, there are many cases where it is possible to persuade the prosecuting attorney to amend the charge from speeding to some non-moving violation upon which the defendant pleads guilty and pays a fine and court costs. There are many attorneys out there who advertise extremely inexpensive fees for handling speeding tickets. However, you should consider whether you really want to hire the cheapest lawyer you can find. I have been handling people's tickets for over thirty-one years, and I have been requiring a $100 fee up front to take on a person's speeding case for a long time now. In more serious cases like DWI or DUI, the fees would be substantially higher. No matter what you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck. You will definitely save money in the long run if you hire an attorney.
