Legal Question in Criminal Law in Nevada

No attorney appointed

My step-son is facing court tomorrow for ''receiving money under false pretenses''. In the January arraignment he asked for a public defender, his understanding was that he would be appointed an attorney, but we just found out this morning that he has NO attorney.

He is an unemployed student.

Is this grounds for a mistrial since he is obviously ''indigent''. What are the options now?
